Free Bathroom Remodel Checklist (Excel & Gsheets)

Track Every Phase of a Bathroom Remodel in One Place

From permit pull to punch list — this free checklist covers planning, demolition, rough-in, tile, fixtures, and final walkthrough, plus a built-in budget tracker to monitor estimated vs. actual costs by category.

50+ Tasks Organized by Phase

The checklist covers every phase of a bathroom remodel in the order work actually happens — Planning & Design, Demo, Rough-In, Tile & Waterproofing, Fixtures & Finishes, and Punch List. Status dropdowns let you mark each task as Not Started, In Progress, Complete, or On Hold.

Built-In Budget Tracker

The Budget Tracker tab breaks costs down by category — labor, tile, plumbing fixtures, electrical, cabinetry, accessories, permits, and contingency. Enter your budgeted and actual costs and the variance calculates automatically. A summary section shows total budgeted, total spent, and remaining balance at a glance.

What's Included in the Download

This free Excel download includes three tabs built for residential remodelers:

  • Bathroom Remodel Checklist — 50+ tasks organized by phase with status dropdowns (Not Started / In Progress / Complete / On Hold) and phase dropdowns (Planning, Demo, Rough-In, Tile, Fixtures, Punch List)
  • Budget Tracker — pre-filled cost categories covering labor, tile & flooring, plumbing fixtures, electrical & lighting, cabinetry, accessories, permits, and contingency; actual costs and variance calculate automatically
  • Contractor & Vendor Tracker — log bids, contacts, and suppliers for every trade in one place

Pre-filled with realistic cost estimates you can adjust to your project. Blue cells are inputs; formulas handle the math.

Why Contractors Use a Bathroom Remodel Checklist

Bathroom remodels fail in predictable ways. Permits get pulled late, tile arrives after demo is done, the vanity doesn't fit the rough-in, and the punch list drags into week six. A checklist doesn't prevent every problem — but it compresses the planning cycle and forces the right conversations before work starts.

For residential GCs and remodelers, the checklist serves three functions: it sequences the work correctly (rough-in before tile, tile before fixtures), it creates a shared reference point between the contractor and the client, and it becomes the paper trail when something goes wrong.

What Makes a Bathroom Remodel More Complex Than It Looks

Bathrooms are the most trade-intensive room in a house relative to their size. A typical remodel touches plumbing, electrical, HVAC (exhaust fan), tile, carpentry, and finish work — often with multiple subcontractors working in sequence in a space under 100 square feet. The margin for coordination error is thin.

The phases don't compress. Waterproofing has to cure before tile. Tile has to set before grouting. Inspections have to pass before walls close. A contractor who skips or reorders these steps pays for it in callbacks, redo work, or failed inspections.

The Most Expensive Bathroom Remodel Mistakes

The three most common sources of cost overrun in bathroom remodels are:

Selecting materials after demo starts. Every week a project waits on a tile order or a custom vanity is a week of carrying overhead on a stalled job. Materials should be selected, ordered, and delivery-confirmed before demo begins.

Skipping the waterproofing inspection. A wet area that fails waterproofing after tile is set means pulling the tile. The inspection happens before tile — not after.

Punch list scope creep. Contractors who walk through a bathroom at substantial completion and verbally agree to fix things without writing them down end up doing a second punch list. Document every item in writing, assign a due date, and don't release final payment until it's closed.

Bathroom Remodel Budget by Scope

Bathroom remodel budgets vary widely depending on scope, finishes, and whether the layout changes. As a general benchmark for residential remodels in most US markets:

A cosmetic refresh (new fixtures, paint, hardware, no layout change) runs $5,000–$15,000. A mid-range full remodel with new tile, vanity, shower, and fixtures runs $15,000–$35,000. A high-end remodel with layout changes, custom tile work, frameless glass, and luxury fixtures runs $35,000–$80,000+. Layout changes that move plumbing — relocating a toilet, moving the shower drain — add $3,000–$8,000 in plumbing costs alone.

The budget tracker in this download is pre-filled with realistic line items across all these categories so you can adjust to your actual project scope.

When to Pull Permits for a Bathroom Remodel

Permits are required in most jurisdictions for any work that touches plumbing, electrical, or structural elements. A cosmetic swap — new fixtures on existing rough-in, new tile on existing substrate — typically doesn't require a permit. But anything involving new drain locations, moving supply lines, adding circuits, installing an exhaust fan where none existed, or removing walls requires a permit.

The risk of skipping a permit isn't the fine — it's the resale. A bathroom remodel done without permits can complicate a property sale when the buyer's inspector asks for the permit history. Pull the permit, get the inspection, close it out, and include it in the contractor documentation packet at job completion.

How to Use This Checklist on a Real Job

The checklist is designed to be assigned, not just reviewed. Each task has fields for who owns it, when it's due, and what its status is. Before a bathroom remodel starts, go through the planning phase as a pre-construction meeting agenda — walk through every item with the homeowner so they understand what they're signing up for. At demo, hand the checklist off to your site lead. At rough-in, use it as your inspection prep. At punch list, print it and walk the room item by item.

The contractors who use checklists most effectively treat them as living documents, not reference sheets. Update status in real time, note surprises, and keep the homeowner's copy current. A client who can see that 42 of 54 tasks are complete is a calmer client than one who's asking for a verbal status update.
